Every batch we sell is accompanied by a Certificate of Analysis from an independent ISO 17025-certified laboratory. The COA confirms origin indicators, ISO 3632 Grade I parameters, and the absence of artificial colorants and common adulterants. Your jar's Batch ID links to its specific COA at /verify. We are the only North American saffron retailer that offers this level of public, batch-specific verification.

What is ISO 3632 Grade I, and why does it matter?

ISO 3632 is the international standard for saffron grading, established by the International Organization for Standardization. Grade I is the highest classification, requiring specific minimum thresholds for crocin (color), safranal (aroma), and picrocrocin (flavor). All Himalayan Saffron meets or exceeds Grade I thresholds on all three parameters. Most supermarket saffron does not disclose its grade — because it often doesn't have one.

How should I store saffron to maintain freshness?

Store in an airtight container away from light, heat, and moisture. Our glass jars are light-blocking by design — keep the lid sealed and store in a cool, dark cupboard (not near your stove). Do not refrigerate unless necessary, as condensation can introduce moisture. Properly stored, Himalayan Saffron maintains peak quality for 2 years from harvest.

How much saffron do I use per recipe?

Less than you think. For most dishes serving 2–4 people, 5–8 threads bloomed in 2 tablespoons of warm water is sufficient. For a large pot of biryani (6–8 servings), use 10–12 threads. For saffron milk (1 cup), 4–5 threads. Genuine high-grade saffron is potent — using too much creates a medicinal, bitter flavor. Start with less; you can always add more.

What is the correct way to bloom saffron before cooking?

Place the threads in a small bowl or ramekin. Add 2 tablespoons of warm (not boiling) water — approximately 65°C / 150°F. Let steep for 10–20 minutes. The liquid will turn deep amber. Add both the liquid and the softened threads to your dish. For deeper color, lightly crush the threads between your fingers before blooming.

Are there customs or import duties for US customers?

Most saffron orders under $800 USD (the US de minimis threshold) enter the United States duty-free. Orders above this threshold may be subject to import duties, which are the responsibility of the buyer. For the vast majority of consumer orders, no customs fees will apply. We clearly mark all packages with accurate customs declarations.

What is your return and refund policy?

If your order arrives damaged, or if you're unsatisfied with the quality for any reason, contact us within 30 days of delivery at hello@himalayansaffron.com with your order number. For quality disputes, we may ask you to enter your Batch ID and share a photo. We offer full refunds or replacements at our discretion. Because saffron is perishable, we cannot accept returns of opened jars except in the case of quality claims.

Is Himalayan Saffron organic or pesticide-free?

Our saffron tests as pesticide-free on multi-residue panels (confirmed by the COA for each batch). Our partner farms do not apply synthetic pesticides to the saffron crop. We do not currently hold an organic certification, as the certification process for Kashmiri small-scale farms is complex and costly. Our lab testing for pesticide residues provides equivalent assurance: if it isn't pesticide-free, it doesn't ship.

What makes Kashmiri saffron different from Iranian or Spanish saffron?

Kashmiri saffron consistently produces threads with higher crocin concentration (color strength) than most other growing regions. The flavor profile is also considered more complex — a deeper, slightly floral note compared to the more one-dimensional profile of some Iranian varieties. It is also significantly rarer: the entire global production of Kashmiri saffron is a small fraction of world supply.
